King Giorgio Armani– the quiet ruler of elegance

Today, one of the greatest names in fashion has passed away. Giorgio Armani stood for elegance, clarity, and discipline – values that remain unmatched to this day. One of the very few who still truly owned and led his company.

Mr. Armani – the “architect of simple beauty.”

The true masters of their craft are almost all gone. What remains are global corporations swallowing up designers – the label may still carry a name, but the original designer has long since had nothing to do with it. Giorgio Armani was one of the last of an era that no longer exists.

I had my first Armani blazer when I was 17. At the time, I was selling them for my employer – and I loved them. No shoulder pads, no lining – something completely new in menswear. Armani managed to create timeless elegance. His fabrics have not gone out of fashion in 35 years. And that means something in this industry – and I know what I’m talking about after 35 years in fashion. Such consistency is as rare as today’s attention span on social media: 1–2 seconds. Fashion shifts just as quickly. But Armani achieved what few ever could: consistency and timeless style.

Whether in fashion, interior design, or his hotels – Armani was ahead of his time. I remember being in San Francisco in 1998, at his concept store. Café & fashion under one roof – a dream. Back then, revolutionary. Today, almost common.

Of course, he could have skipped one or two product lines – like the jeans collections. But well, everyone moves with the times. In the high-end sector, though, hardly anyone could compete with him. But that is, as always, only my opinion.

Time eventually catches us all. With Armani, however, the fashion world has lost one of its greatest. Someone like him will not step forward again – no successor of that quality is waiting in the wings.

I simply felt the need to write down these few words here in the Vita Maison blog.

Heute ist einer der größten Namen der Modewelt gegangen. Giorgio Armani stand für Eleganz, Klarheit und Disziplin – Werte, die bis heute unübertroffen sind. Einer der wenigen, die ihre Firma noch wirklich selbst führten.

Mr. Armani – der „Architekt der schlichten Schönheit“.

Die Meister ihres Faches sind nun endgültig beinahe alle verschwunden. Übrig bleiben globale Konsortien, die Modedesigner geschluckt haben – dort steht nur mehr der Name auf dem Etikett, während der wahre Designer längst nichts mehr mit der Marke zu tun hat. Giorgio Armani war einer der letzten Vertreter einer Epoche, die es so nicht mehr gibt.

Ich hatte mein erstes Sakko von Armani mit 17 Jahren. Damals verkaufte ich diese Sakkos bei meinem damaligen Arbeitgeber – und ich liebte sie. Ohne Schulterpolster, ohne Futter – etwas völlig Neues im Herrenmode-Sektor. Armani schaffte es, zeitlose Eleganz zu kreieren. Die Stoffe sind nach 35 Jahren nicht aus der Mode gekommen. Und das bedeutet etwas in dieser Branche – und ich weiß, wovon ich spreche, nach 35 Jahren Modegeschäft. Diese Beständigkeit ist so selten wie die heutige Aufmerksamkeitsspanne mancher Social-Media-Nutzer: 1–2 Sekunden. Ähnlich schnelllebig ist die Mode und der ständige Wechsel in ihr. Armani jedoch schaffte es: Beständigkeit und zeitloser Stil.

Ob in Mode, Interior oder seinen Hotels – Armani war seiner Zeit voraus. Ich erinnere mich: 1998 in San Francisco, im Konzeptstore von Armani. Café & Fashion Store in einem – ein Traum. Damals revolutionär, heute fast normal.

Natürlich hätte er sich die eine oder andere Linie sparen können – etwa die Jeans-Linien. Aber gut, alle gehen mit der Zeit. Im hochwertigen Segment jedoch konnte ihm kaum jemand das Wasser reichen. Aber das ist, wie immer, nur meine Meinung.

Die Zeit holt uns leider alle ein. Doch mit Armani verliert die Modewelt einen der Größten. Jemand wie er steht nicht mehr in den Startlöchern – und es wird niemand mehr nachkommen, der diese Qualität erreicht.

Es war mir ein Anliegen, hier im Vita Maison Blog-Bereich ein paar Worte zu ihm zu schreiben.
