Abu Dhabi – a fascinating city, or rather an emirate.
Very diverse, yet calmer than Dubai.
And first things first: if you come from Dubai by rental or private car, pay strict attention to the speed limits.
In Dubai you might get away with a few km/h more, but in Abu Dhabi it’s 140 – and already at 145 you’ll be fined. I know what I’m talking about, I’ve paid it myself. Also: forget about using your phone while driving. Cameras detect it immediately and fines are high. Do everything beforehand and enjoy a relaxed drive.
Abu Dhabi is clearly a place for culture lovers. Museums everywhere – and the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a highlight. Parking? No problem. Tickets online? Yes, but you can also just walk in spontaneously. I’m not a big planner and still never had issues. If you take your time, plan 3–4 hours. Afterwards sit outside, look at the water, admire the roof – that alone is an experience.
And of course the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. Breathtaking. Even the way in is special: from the parking lot you pass through a glass dome, then comes the long walkway with shops, American fast food chains, a well-known coffee chain and regional snacks. You can walk or take the moving walkway – like at the airport.Please respect the dress code: just like you wouldn’t enter a church in a tank top (unless you lack respect), the same applies here. Head covering, shoulders covered, and you’re fine.Inside: even more impressive. The world’s largest carpet, huge chandeliers, fine inlays – all handmade. The open courtyard with towers on each corner is stunning. Plan 2–3 hours if you want to truly enjoy it.
Another highlight: the Presidential Palace Qasr Al Watan. Built only in 2015, but it feels like from another era. Everything marble, everything gold. The forecourt is immense. Inside, the grand hall – over 35 meters across, clad in marble and real gold – feels like a fairytale. Security checks are like at the airport, understandable for an active presidential palace. Open daily 10–20, tickets also easily available on site. I almost never pre-book and it always worked.
Also worth a stop: the old presidential palace, now a hotel – perfect for a coffee break.
There’s more: the National Museum, the Guggenheim (still under construction), Ferrari World, the F1 circuit, Yas Island with Warner Bros. Park and SeaWorld. Something for everyone – families or adventurers.
And the beaches: Saadiyat Island is a must. White sand like the Maldives, turquoise water, luxury resorts and beach clubs. Day passes include sunbed, drink, meal.
If you prefer nature: the mangroves of Saadiyat.
And Saadiyat North with its promenade, stylish cafés and restaurants is also highly recommended.
Food tip: the fish market. Not fine dining, but fresh, authentic, great value – a must for seafood lovers. And yes, the malls – huge, luxurious, with everything you need and everything you don’t.
Abu Dhabi has it all: culture, luxury, beaches, theme parks. Best explored by rental car for flexibility – as long as you keep your gas foot under control.

Abu Dhabi – eine tolle Stadt, oder besser gesagt ein Emirat.
Sehr abwechslungsreich, aber deutlich ruhiger als Dubai.
Und gleich mal vorweg, falls ihr mit dem Mietwagen oder dem eigenen Auto von Dubai kommt: achtet genau auf die Geschwindigkeit. In Dubai kommt man mit ein paar km/h drüber noch davon, aber in Abu Dhabi gilt strikt 140 – und schon bei 145 wird man zur Kassa gebeten. Ich weiß wovon ich rede, ich habe schon gezahlt. Dazu: bitte das Handy während der Fahrt in der Hand vergessen. Die Kameras erkennen das sofort und das kann richtig teuer werden. Also alles vorher erledigen und dann entspannt fahren.
Abu Dhabi ist eindeutig etwas für Kulturliebhaber. Überall Museen – und das Louvre Abu Dhabi ist ein Highlight. Parkplätze? Kein Problem. Tickets online? Ja, geht, aber man kann auch einfach spontan hin. Ich bin keiner der großen Vorplaner und habe trotzdem nie Probleme gehabt. Wenn man sich Zeit nimmt, sollte man 3–4 Stunden einplanen. Danach raus, aufs Wasser schauen, das Dach bestaunen – schon das ist ein Erlebnis für sich.
Und dann natürlich die Sheikh Zayed Moschee. Atemberaubend. Schon der Weg dorthin ist besonders: vom Parkplatz geht es durch eine Glaskuppel, dann beginnt der lange Gang mit Shops, amerikanischen Fastfood-Ketten, einer bekannten Kaffeekette und regionalen Snacks. Man läuft entweder zu Fuß oder fährt bequem auf einem Laufband – wie am Flughafen.Bitte an die Kleidung denken: bei uns geht man ja auch nicht mit Tanktop in die Kirche – außer es mangelt an Respekt. Genau so auch hier: Kopfbedeckung, Schultern bedeckt, und man ist auf der sicheren Seite.Drinnen ist alles noch beeindruckender: der größte Teppich der Welt, riesige Luster, feine Intarsien – alles Handarbeit. Der freie Platz in der Mitte mit den Türmen an jeder Ecke ist ein Traum. Plant 2–3 Stunden ein, sonst rauscht man zu schnell durch.
Ein weiteres Highlight ist der Präsidentenpalast Qasr Al Watan. Erst 2015 gebaut, aber er wirkt wie aus einer anderen Zeit. Alles Marmor, alles Gold. Schon die Fläche vor dem Palast ist gigantisch. Innen dann der große Saal – über 35 Meter Durchmesser, Marmor, Gold, man fühlt sich wie im Märchen. Ja, man wird kontrolliert wie am Flughafen, logisch, es ist der aktive Präsidentenpalast. Aber alles läuft entspannt. Geöffnet ist täglich von 10 bis 20 Uhr, Tickets bekommt man auch vor Ort, ganz unkompliziert. Ich buche fast nie etwas im Voraus – und es hat immer funktioniert.
Nebenbei: auch der alte Präsidentenpalast, heute ein Hotel, ist für eine Kaffee-Pause zu empfehlen.
Natürlich gibt es noch mehr: das Nationalmuseum, das Guggenheim (noch im Bau), Freizeitparks wie Ferrari World, den F1-Ring, Yas Island mit Warner Bros. Park und SeaWorld. Da ist wirklich für jeden etwas dabei – von Familien bis Abenteuerlustigen.
Und die Strände: Saadiyat Island darf man nicht auslassen. Weißer Sand wie auf den Malediven, türkisblaues Meer, Luxusresorts und Beach Clubs. Für Tagesgäste gibt es Pässe inklusive Liege, Getränk und Essen.
Wer Natur mag: die Mangroven von Saadiyat.
Und Saadiyat North ist mit Promenade, stylischen Cafés und Restaurants ein echter Tipp.
Kulinarisch mein Favorit: der Fischmarkt. Kein Sterne-Luxus, aber frisch, authentisch, preislich top – perfekt für Fisch- und Meeresfrüchte-Fans. Und klar, die Malls gibt es auch hier wie überall – riesig, luxuriös, mit allem, was man braucht und vielem, was man nicht braucht.
Abu Dhabi hat alles: Kultur, Luxus, Strand, Freizeitparks. Ideal zum Selbererkunden – mit Leihwagen ist man einfach flexibler, sofern man seinen Gasfuß im Griff hat.
